Calabria

Calabria occupies the extreme southern part of Italy:  it is an area of extraordinary beauty, rich in history that dates back to Classical Antiquity, Magna Graecia (Pythagoras was born in Crotone) and beyond; from the Romans to the Visigoths (King Alaric is said to be buried with his treasure in the Busento river near Cosenza); from the Byzantines to the Saracens and Normans.

Even the Albanians came here in the Middle Ages and settled in the northern region where the Pollino National Park is located and in the area of Castrovillari, where some people still speak a sort of a medieval form of the Albanian language. Exploring Calabria’s territory and looking for good investments is an opportunity not to be missed, as it means discovering places and cultures seemingly untouched by centuries. A paradise for sun seekers and searchers after real estate value, Calabria, is very close to Sicily, separated only by a few kilometres of the Strait of Messina. This region is surrounded for ¾ by the sea: its territory is mainly characterized by rugged mountains and some fertile lands.

calabria pollinoCalabria is a growing tourists’ (and investors’) destination:  impressive mountains, such as the Pollino and the Sila Massifs, drop down to the Tyrrhenian Sea; then there’s the east coast where the marvellous Ionian Sea is located.  Sandy beaches and resorts are waiting for you along the Ionian Coast (in the area of Sibari above all) and the Tyrrhenian Coast: resorts include San Nicola Arcella, Praia a Mare and the more famous Scalea and Tropea, which can offer good opportunities for those looking at Italian property for sale.

Transport and communications

Communications are fairly good in Calabria. There are airports at Reggio Calabria and Lamezia Terme. There is a motorway running down the west of this narrow region, the A3, that links with the A1 that stretches up into northern Italy.

Cities of Calabria

The provincial capital, Reggio Calabria is at the very toe of Italy and faces Sicily, which lies across the Strait of Messina.  Its position makes Reggio a holiday hotspot and a good area for fruitful real estate investments.

calabria sibariCosenza, an historical town of great interest, offers a good base for exploring La Sila, one of the great remaining stretches of European forest.
If you turn to the Ionian Coast, you’ll see how Greek and Roman remains abound and how many unspoiled beaches lie below splendid hillsides and fertile lands, as in the area of Sibari.

Cuisine

calabria foodCalabrian cuisine has all the features of southern Italy with some influence from the many cultures that have influenced this territory, from Magna Graecia to the present day. The Calabrian recipes make heavy use of vegetables the land abounds in:  eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, red onions and beans, ginger, and especially, the chilli peppers. Preserved foods, such as anchovies (in olive oil and with red pepper), pork sausages (such as brawn nduja and Calabrian sausage), cheeses, pickled vegetables and dried tomatoes are of great importance. Today, in the cultivated areas you can find excellent agricultural products; many cheeses are produced in the mountains, and viticulture and olive production are on the rise.
